The Purpose
My Irish Hunger Memorial mobile app was commissioned by the Battery Park City Authority to showcase a unique art installation in the heart of New York City. Our remit was to design and build a mobile app that stayed true to the artistic vision of the designer of the memorial – Brian Tolle. We worked with the team from BPCA to conceptualize and design a unique experience – one that gives viewers a realistic experience of the monument itself.
The app explores the history behind The Irish Hunger Memorial located in Battery Park City, New York City. It has been developed to give visitors a more immersive experience and detailed explanation of the Irish Hunger Memorial, which was designed to raise public awareness of the events that led to the famine of 1845-52 and to encourage efforts to address current and future hunger worldwide.
The Tech
The Irish Hunger Memorial app was one of the first apps built using Xamarin for cross platform compatibility with native performance. Our team decided to use Xamarin, since we had to build for both iOS and Android platforms on a limited budget. More traditional cross-platform technologies had severe performance limitations.
