The Purpose
Barnes and Noble booksellers created a Used Book Marketplace where independent booksellers and individuals can list their books at discounted prices. This marketplace was intended as an added feature on the bn.com site which only sold new books at the time. Our remit was to build the platform for booksellers to list their books electronically, and hook the website to BN’s SAP ERP backend for order processing, fraud checks and fulfillment.
The Tech
The team faced several challenges in this project, including the integration of fraud checking services, nascent sales tax collection services, and, at the time, very complex SAP ERP integration. The website eventually provided single sign-on for users for the new and used book sections, and a seamless buying experience for both types of books. Order fulfillment data was kept in synch between BN’s SAP system and the retailers’ data feeds.
